More students have come from overseas to study in the UK than ever before, according to new statistics released today by the University and Colleges Admissions Service.
Nearly 20% more overseas students are being admitted to UK universities this year compared to last year, the biggest single increase recorded by UCAS.

Figures released on Friday 27 April 2001 by HESA show an eight per cent increase in the number of non-EU overseas students in UK Higher Education institutions in the 2000 / 2001 academic year. The increase in new entrants for 2000 entry is thirteen per cent, a higher increase than at any time since 1996. The rise reflects the success of the Education UK brand campaign.

Education and Employment Minister, Tessa Blackstone, said:
'More postgraduate students from overseas are coming to the UK. The total number of full-time postgraduates from outside the EU increased by twelve per cent in 2000 / 2001 and new entrants are up by sixteen per cent. These international students recognise and contribute to our world-class reputation for research. With one per cent of the world's population, the UK carries out five per cent of the world's research effort and produces eight per cent of the world's scientific papers.'
